Julia Sanches
Julia Sanches translates literature from Catalan, Portuguese, and Spanish into English. Her work has been supported by grants from NYSCA (2016), the PEN Heim (2017), and the National Endowment for the Arts (2025), among others, as well as by multiple international residencies. She has been longlisted and/or shortlisted for various prizes, including the Cercador Prize, the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute Prize, the International Booker, and the PEN Translation Prize, which she won for Mariana Oliver’s Migratory Birds.
Julia is a member of the Literary Translators Division of the National Writers Union, where she and her colleagues organize for better working conditions for literary translators. She has also taught or visited classes at universities across the U.S. and abroad, including Columbia University, Brown University, Sarah Lawrence, and Chicago University. In 2026, she served as the Princeton Translator-in-residence.
Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Julia has spent extended periods in the U.S., Mexico, Switzerland, Scotland, and Spain. After returning to the U.S. in 2013, she worked at a literary agency in New York City for four years. Since 2017, she has called Providence, Rhode Island home.
